Pen and ink portrait drawing for sale

Portrait 264B is an original pen and ink portrait drawing by Italian artist Dario Moschetta. In this artwork, the figure is seen from behind and turns to look back over a bare shoulder, meeting the viewer with a calm, direct gaze. Short curly hair frames the face and gathers at the nape of the neck. The composition is vertical, A4 format (21×29.7 cm). Furthermore, the back and shoulders fill the lower half of the sheet, so the drawing moves from a dense, dark head of curls to open white paper.

Moschetta builds this crosshatching portrait drawing entirely with line and dot, without any wash or grey tone. First, he shapes the curls with long, flowing strokes that follow the direction of each lock, layering them where the hair turns into shadow. Next, he models the face with fine stippling on the forehead and cheek, and with tight crosshatching around the eyes, the nose and the jaw. However, he leaves most of the back as bare paper. Instead, the hatching on the neck and shoulder thins out into short strokes and then into single dots, so the light seems to fall across the skin. Consequently, this black and white portrait drawing holds strong contrast in the hair and a soft, luminous quality in the skin.
