Large Format Contemporary Painting – A Raw Tribute to Canova

“Napoleon” is a large format contemporary painting created in 2021 by Italian artist Dario Moschetta. It measures 145 x 190 cm and was sold in June 2023 to a private collector in Vancouver, Canada. This striking portrait revisits the neoclassical bust of Napoleon by Antonio Canova, transforming it with bold texture and emotional tension.

Rough Surfaces and Intense Expression

Unlike the polished marble of the original sculpture, this painting embraces imperfection. Dario Moschetta used acrylic paint and oil pastels to create a textured and layered surface. Cracks, distortions and visible brushstrokes cover the face, revealing fragility rather than power. The piece becomes a portrait of human vulnerability, not classical perfection.

The dominant blue tones contrast with the deep black background, creating visual tension. Every stroke is intentional. The artist worked and reworked the surface until the image almost fractured. This process gives the painting a sense of history and memory—like something weathered by time.

A Journey from Studio to Collector

The artwork was first displayed in a private residence in Padua, Italy. Later, it was shipped directly from the studio, rolled inside a protective tube. Once in Canada, it was stretched on a custom wooden frame by the buyer. Today, it lives in Vancouver as part of a growing international collection of Moschetta’s works.
